Understanding The Significance Of
The Native American Pipe
Piece Pipes, also called Calumets; have been a central ceremonial tradition and spiritual activity for American Native Americans for many centuries. Tobacco is indigenous to North America and it was the Native Americans who first used it to smoke in various forms of hand made pipes. There were trade routes where various pipes, tobaccos, herbs, beads and shell were traded among Native American tribes long before Columbus arrived. It was actually Native Americans who introduced tobacco to the world. Columbus was given dried tobacco leaves as a gift from Native Americans and took this back to Europe where it almost instantly caught on.
Often used as a way of communication between the spirit world and the human world, native Americans believe that the smoke from the pipe can take their prayers and their thoughts to the great spirit. Native Americans use a mixture of various herbs which is sometimes mixed with some tobacco. A common mixture is called kinnic kinnick. Kinnic kinnick is a herb that can be smoked that comes from the bark of the red willow tree. It has an attractive aroma.
There are many different mixtures of herbs and tobacco which is used for different results. Pipe smoking was and still is a form of Native American Medicine. Various forms of herbal and herbal tobacco mixtures are believed to have healing power. For many centuries, tobacco was believed to be a healing substance and a pain killer.
Pipes are decorated with various feathers, fur and beading as well as other works of art. Each aspect of the decorations and embellishments of the pipe has significant symbolic meaning. The symbolic meanings and embellishments varies from tribe to tribe. They have great personal and spiritual significance. A typical pipe ceremony will generally acknowledge the four directions before smoking. Native Americans assign a color to the four directions. These are:
Red is East
Yellow is South
Black is West
White is North

You can likely recall from watching movies that caluments or peace pipes were smoked at the conclusion of treaties made with the White Man. Refusal to smoke when invited is considered an insult to Native Americans.
