Understanding Smudging And Native American Incense
While there are a number of different herbs Native Americans burn for hundreds of reasons, the three main mystic herbs are sage, Cedar and Sweetgrass. Here are three basic definitions of what they do:
Sage
Sage is burned to sort of wash off the outside world and drive out negative thoughts and evil spirits. it is also used for healing.
Cedar
The mystic powers of Cedar are much like that of Sage. Cedar can also be used as a great medicine of protection.
Sweetgrass
Sweetgrass is a holy grass that will bring a blessing of Mother Earth's love. |
Smudging has been done for thousands of years. It is a purifying process in which a cleansing is done using various herbs and incense. Sage is used before praying in order to purify the mind, the body and the spirit. Before a sacred ceremony if is used to clear and purify the auric and physical body fields. Sage can also be used to purify various sacred belongings such as fetishes, eagle feathers, piece pipes, sacred jewelry, sacred gemstones and crystals. Many also use sage to purify dwellings, work place offices, hotel rooms, vehicles and camp tents. Many people will carry with them a small amount of Sage in a medicine bag or pouch for this activity. In doing so, they are insuring their personal as well as spiritual well being.
Smudging is often done simply to keep evil spirits and negative energy out of a certain area. Native Americans will smudge areas and peoples right before religious ceremonies. Sage drives away any known or hidden evil spirits and/or evil feelings. In many Indian nations, their sweat lodges are covered with Sage so tribal members can rub the sage leaf on their bodied while in the sweat for cleansing.

Sage is often burned to drive away any known or hidden evil spirits or evil feelings. It is a highly valued because of it's aromatic properties. When performing cleansing activity, you need to start in the east location and work in a clockwise manner. As the smoke from the sage rises, it takes with it evil spirits and negative energy. When cleansing a room or house it it best to open windows and let the smoke carry away evil spirits and negative energy. The smoke is often fanned with a feather, fanning stick or your hand.
Here is a Typical Step-By Step Smudging ceremony

Sage needs to smolder not burn in an open flame. Smudging is often done in a shell such as an abalone shell or a smudge stick or incense burner. Once a smudging is performed this will bring on thoughts that are positive.
