Hopi Eagle Dancer
The American Indian , The Eagle And The Eagle Dancer
The Eagle is the most sacred animal to most Native Americans. Not only do most Native Americans call them the master of the sky, the Eagle is believed to take prayers to the Great Spirit. Most believe that the Eagle is picked by God to bring messages. They can soar higher and see farther than any other bird. The Eagle is considered the leader of all animals. The Eagle represents strength, power, and is ruler of the sky. The Hopi Indians capture them and keep them on their roof tops for protection and spend a great deal of time caring for them. The middle picture on the photos above is an Eagle catcher. Many tribes such as the Hopi go high upon cliffs to capture them. Eagle feathers are prized possessions and used in various religious ceremonies.
Almost every American Tribe has what they call an Eagle dance. The Hopi Eagle Dance Kachina appears at night ceremonies in March along with the Mud Heads. The dancer imitates the motion and the cry of an eagle to perfection. The Hopi Eagle Kachina Dancer is called Kwa. To wear or hold an Eagle feather Native Americans believe gives them immediate notice with the Great Spirit. One of the highest honors among Indian people is to be given an Eagle feather. When one holds an Eagle Feather, one must be of clear mind and not consume any drugs or alcohol. If an Eagle Feather is dropped on the ground, it must be cleansed. Most Indians would rather lose their horse or there home than lose an Eagle Feather.

The Cherokees was at one time located in the Eastern part of the United States. White man forced them in the Trial Of Tears to relocate to the state of Oklahoma. The US Government has, like they did in almost every other instance, given them most of the state of Oklahoma and then forced them to relocate there. When White populations grew out to the state of Oklahoma, White man and the US Government did what they continued to do, void the treaty and force the Cherokees into a smaller land mass. The Cherokees has always had what has become known as an Eagle Dance. However, the dance, just like the Hopi and other Tribal Eagle Dancers has evolved over time. Many Tribes would copy some of the dances, customs and religious ceremonies of other tribes.
After the Cherokees were forced into the state of Oklahoma, they came into contact with other various Indian Tribes also forced into the state from other locations. The forced integration of various Native American cultures from different tribes caused even a greater mixing of beliefs and customs practiced as well as dances.
To the right is an old photograph of a Cherokee Eagle Dancer. Notice the difference in the painting and clothing worn by the Cherokee Eagle Dancer compared to the Hopi Eagle Dancer pictured above. The Hopi Eagle dancer wears a mask while the Cherokee Eagle Dancer has a painted face. The Cherokee Eagle Dancer has painted lower legs and the Hopi Eagle dancer has none. The Cherokee Eagle Dancer wears a breechcloth while the Hopi wears the traditional Hopi Skirt.
