R. Carlos Nakai~Creation Chant
Biography Of R. Carlos Nakai
Of Navajo-Ute heritage, R. Carlos Nakai is the world’s premier performer of the Native American flute. He began his musical studies on the trumpet, but a car accident ruined his embouchure. His musical interests took a turn when he was given a traditional cedar flute as a gift and challenged to master it. As an artist, he is an adventurer and risk taker, always giving his musical imagination free rein. Nakai is also an iconoclastic traditionalist who views his cultural heritage not only as a source and inspiration, but also a dynamic continuum of natural change, growth, and adaptation subject to the artist’s expressive needs.
Nakai’s first album, Changes, was released by Canyon Records in 1983, and since then he has released over thirty-five albums with Canyon plus additional albums and guest appearances on other labels. In addition to his educational workshops and residencies, Nakai has appeared as a soloist throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, and has worked with Grammy® winner flutist Paul Horn, guitarist/luthier William Eaton, composer James DeMars among many others. The famed American choreographer Martha Graham used Nakai's second album, Cycles, in her last work Night Chant. Nakai contributed music to the major motion pictures New World (New Line) and Geronimo (Columbia).
Nakai, while cognizant of the traditional use of the flute as a solo instrument, began finding new settings for it, especially in the genres of jazz and classical. He founded the ethnic jazz ensemble, the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet, to explore the intersection of ethnic and jazz idioms.
Nakai brought the flute into the concert hall, performing with over fifteen symphony and chamber orchestras. He was a featured soloist on the Philip Glass composition, Piano Concerto No. 2: After Lewis & Clark, premiered by the Omaha Symphony. Nakai also works with producer and arranger Billy Williams, a two-time Grammy® winner, in composing for and performing the traditional flute in orchestral works of a lighter vein.
In a cross-cultural foray, Nakai performed extensively with the Wind Travelin’ Band, a traditional Japanese ensemble from Kyoto which resulted in an album, Island of Bows. Additional recordings with ethnic artists include In A Distant Place with Tibetan flutist and chanter Nawang Khechog, and Our Beloved Land with famed Hawaiian slack key guitarist and singer Keola Beamer. Recently, Nakai released Voyagers with Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Udi Bar-David which blends Native American melodies with Jewish and Arabic songs.
Nakai has received two gold records (500,000 units sold) for Canyon Trilogy and Earth Spirit which are the first (and only) Native American recordings to earn this recognition. He has sold over four million albums in the course of his career. His Grammy® nominations include:
Ancestral Voices (1994 Best Traditional Folk Album)
Inner Voices and Inside Monument Valley (both for 2000 Best New Age Album)
In A Distant Place (2001 Best New Age Album)
Fourth World (2002 Best New Age Album)
Sanctuary (2003 Best Native American Album)
People of Peace (2004 Best New Age Album)
Reconnections (2008 Best Native American Album)
A Navy veteran, Nakai earned a Master’s Degree in American Indian Studies from the University of Arizona. He was awarded the Arizona Governor’s Arts Award in 1992, and an honorary doctorate from Northern Arizona University in 1994. In 2005 Nakai was inducted into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame. Nakai has also authored a book with composer James DeMars, The Art of the Native American Flute, which is a guide to performing the traditional cedar flute
R. Carlos Nakai: Mythic Dreamer $18.95
The pure and simple quality of his flute will remind many of his earlier works. Eleven arrangements of Zuni, Lakota, Kiowa and Cheyenne melodies along with seven original compositions and a piece by James DeMars make this a pleasant reminder of his beauty and unique style. In Nakai’s words, “As a dreamer journeying through my own time, I am surrounded by influences that transform the awareness and knowledge that springs from the wisdom of my ancestral being.”

Improvisational recordings honoring the breathtaking, constantly changing San Luis Valley, the world’s largest alpine valley at 8,000 feet above sea level and 100 miles long by 60 miles wide. It is sacred ground to many tribes who have inhabited it over the years including Athapascan nomads, Comanche, Kiowa, Arapahoe and Ute. This is Nakai’s first album to focus on one place. Of the 17 pieces, two are vocals and 5 intersperse vocals with flute. Drumming and the sounds of coyotes and great horned owls grace these selections. A brilliant tribute to this most sacred land.
Nakai explores the relationship between the Rainbow World where First Man, First Woman and Coyote dwell and our world where we are forging new traditions and history. We are each a part of the rainbow tapestry building upon but never replacing the older worlds and stories. The album is comprised of traditional and improvisational pieces, with chanting and his trademark electronic processing creating the sound that has enthralled so many. “Amazing Grace” is the closing piece.

Native flutes blend with the sounds of nature, native drumming, rattles, and rainstick, with keyboard accents, in a richly textured harmony of ancient and modern sounds.
Marina Raye's Liquid Silk album is just that. At times you'll barely notice it's on it melts so easily into the background. Subtle nature sounds, wild birds, owls, flowing water, ocean waves and crickets all blend together in a meditative dream-like experience for the heart, mind and soul that will heal and rejuvenate all who listen. Her albums are big sellers to those who enjoy flute and nature sounds with a special emphasis on birds. Our number one flute album every year since it’s release in 1999.
Take a walk in an enchanted forest as Marina Raye embarks on her twelfth journey of music entitled Nature’s Enchantment. The air is filled with the sounds of wood thrush, owls, tree frogs, crickets and mourning doves as her tenor and bass flute ring out from somewhere deep within the forest. The beauty and tranquility of Nature are always present in a Marina Raye recording. If you loved Liquid Silk, then be prepared for more of the sensuality and richness of that experience so many of her fans have come to love.

Under One Sky $18.95
Strangely enough there really aren't enough flute compilations available. Here's an unusual one from Red Feather Music produced by Gary Stroutsos. Many songs have other instruments added so this is in many ways a contemporary album. It has a great variety of artists starting off with Robert Mirabal's "Popay Runner." (actually this is a vocal but very moving and gentle) Mary Youngblood's "Yuba" flows seamlessly from this cut. Other artists include Jeff Ball, Andrew Vasquez, John Rainer, Jr. (a welcome addition from an under appreciated artist with a Sioux vocal chant), John Huling, Keith Bear, Joseph Fire Crow, Nakai and Kater, Gary Stroutsos and People of the Willows. All join in to preserve the essence and beauty of the Native American flute.

For more than 15 years, the Native Flute Ensemble has been at the forefront of the revival of interest in Native American music throughout the world. Through the group’s five releases, the ensemble received critical and popular acclaim from early on. They were one of the first ensembles to marry the Native American flute with pow wow drums, rattles and keyboards. At the same time they also excel in traditional Native American flute music as in the track, “Offerings Against the Sky.” These 14 compositions re-establish them as the premier ensemble of flute players.

The enchanting result is a hypnotic invitation to enter a world of peace and tranquility that continues on in this seamless presentation.
