Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian is one of the
most controversial and significant chronicles of traditional
American Indian culture ever compiled. Issued in very limited
editions between 1907 and 1930, The North American Indian
is still a major, and sometimes only, source for Native American
history, traditions, and customary dress. continues to influence
our image of the American Indian today.
Determined
to document "the old time Indian, his dress, his ceremonies,
his life and manners", Curtis visited 80 tribes living
all over North America, gathering a total of twenty volumes
of material. He produced over 2000 photographic plates and
thousands of pages of written narrative.
This
CD features ALL of the published photographs from the text
volumes as well as the accompanying portfolio plates. A foreword
by Theodore Roosevelt tops off the 2,200 images from the Curtis
Collection! (And don't forget the bonus images!)
