Rites of Passage tells the sacred story of girls becoming knowledgeable young women and boys evolving into responsible young men through powerful First Nation colors and symbols. This horse, or Sacred Dog, carries the hopes and dreams of all young people as they travel through life. Green represents growth on this journey of color... blue symbolizes holiness and orange marks the beginning and ending of these sacred transitions in life. The four butterflies represent the Creator and the four stages of life for women. The warrior's footsteps are symbolized by four horse tracks as young men learn about their responsibilities. The Tree of Life stands for the past, present and future generations.

About The Artist Monte Yellow Bird Sr

Monte Yellow Bird Sr., known in the art world as Black Pinto Horse, is a nationally known Artist, Cultural/Educational Consultant, Presenter and Storyteller. A member of the Arikara and Hidatsa Nation from White Shield, North Dakota, he currently resides in Great Falls Montana where he served during the fall of 2007 through the spring of 2008 as the Artist-in-Residence with the Great Falls Public schools and Paris Gibson Square Museum.
When he is not performing these responsibilities, or working in his studio, Monte hardly misses an opportunity to share his insights, talents and experiences at regional events as well as pursue other short-term residencies throughout the nation as time allows.
